I lived in a city called Zhu Hai until I was 9 and moved overseas with my parents. The city name meant the pearl of the sea in Chinese. The whole city was built to be the perfect seaside town where rich Hong Kong businessmen came to play golf on the weekends and attract tourists from other wealthier neighbouring cities.
Even so, I loved the city. It was great. This is one of the things that I miss the most. It’s the statue of the fisher girl. There’s a whole beautiful myth surrounding her and the city but I don’t think it’s very authentic. It suspiciously incorporates the names of the all the major suburbs of the city and conveniently explained how the city name originated. If one day I feel generous and romantic enough willing to believe the myth for a second, I’ll tell it to you.
Nevertheless in my 9 year old mind, I thought that this statue was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
